Jack, a 5-year-old boy with a blue cap, grins widely while clutching a notebook and pencil in his bedroom, his mother a woman with brown hair and green sweater smiling beside him.
Jack woke up early with his notebook and pencil. Today was special! He had planned a whole day to see big machines at work. "I'm going to draw every machine I see," Jack said excitedly. He grabbed his backpack and put on his favorite blue cap. "First stop is Farmer Ben's farm," Jack said. He could hardly wait. He loved machines more than anything. "Let's go!" he shouted.
Jack climbs up the steps of a large green tractor, looking up at Farmer Ben, a 45-year-old man in overalls, who waves from the driver's seat under a bright sky.
At the farm, Jack saw a huge green tractor. Farmer Ben waved from the driver's seat. "Want to see how it works?" he asked. Jack climbed up the steps carefully. The tractor had big black wheels and a loud engine. "I use it to plow fields and plant seeds," Farmer Ben explained. Jack drew the tractor in his notebook. "This is amazing!" he said.
Jack points up at a tall yellow crane at a construction site, while Sarah, a 32-year-old woman in a hard hat, operates it from a small cabin high above.
Next, Mom drove Jack to a construction site. Workers wore yellow hard hats everywhere. "Look at that tall crane!" Jack pointed up. A builder named Sarah operated the crane from a small cabin. "I lift heavy steel beams to build tall buildings," she said through her radio. Jack watched the crane's long arm swing across the sky. He quickly drew it in his notebook.
Inside the crane cabin, Jack sits in the seat, gripping a joystick with a wide-eyed expression, as Sarah, wearing a hard hat, points to the controls beside him.
Sarah let Jack sit in the crane cabin. So many buttons and levers! "This joystick moves the hook up and down," Sarah showed him. Jack pretended to drive while Sarah supervised. The view from up high was incredible. He could see the whole construction site below. "Building things looks like fun," Jack said. Sarah smiled and gave him a toy hard hat.
At the fire station, Miguel, a 38-year-old firefighter, slides down a pole as Jack watches, wide-eyed, next to a shiny red fire truck with flashing lights.
At the fire station, bells rang suddenly! Firefighter Miguel slid down the pole. "We have a practice drill," he explained to Jack. The red fire truck gleamed in the garage. It had ladders, hoses, and flashing lights. "This truck helps us save people and put out fires," Miguel said. Jack's eyes grew wide. He added the fire truck to his notebook carefully.
Jack, wearing a firefighter helmet, presses a button inside the red fire truck, grinning as the siren blares, while Miguel laughs beside him.
Miguel let Jack sit in the fire truck. He showed Jack the water hose controls and the loud siren button. "Can I press it?" Jack asked excitedly. "Just once," Miguel laughed. WOOO WOOO! The siren was so loud! Other firefighters waved and smiled. Jack wore a real firefighter helmet for a photo. "This is the best day ever!" he cheered.
At a small airport, Captain Rosa, a 40-year-old woman in a pilot uniform, checks her white-and-blue plane while Jack covers his ears, watching the spinning propeller.
Mom drove Jack to the small local airport. A pilot named Captain Rosa was checking her plane. It was white with blue stripes. "I fly people to different cities," she told Jack. The propeller spun when she tested the engine. Jack covered his ears—it was loud! The plane had two seats and lots of instruments inside. Jack drew the plane's propeller carefully.
Inside the cockpit, Jack holds the control wheel, smiling dreamily, as Captain Rosa pins plastic wings onto his shirt, with the runway visible through the window.
Captain Rosa showed Jack the cockpit. "This wheel steers the plane left and right," she explained. Jack held the wheel gently, pretending to fly through clouds. "These dials tell me how high and fast I'm going," Rosa continued. Jack saw the runway through the front window. "Maybe I'll be a pilot someday," he said dreamily. Rosa gave him plastic pilot wings to pin on his shirt.
At a train station platform, Conductor James, a 50-year-old man in a navy uniform and striped cap, waves as Jack and his mother, a woman with brown hair and green sweater, board a blue locomotive.
Their last stop was the train station. A big blue locomotive sat on the tracks, hissing steam. Conductor James wore a navy uniform and a striped cap. "All aboard for the three o'clock tour!" he called out. Jack and Mom climbed into the passenger car. The whistle blew—CHOO CHOO! The train started moving slowly down the tracks. Jack pressed his face against the window.
In the locomotive's engine room, Jack pulls a cord to blow the whistle, laughing joyfully, while Conductor James stands beside him pulling a lever, gauges and levers surrounding them.
Conductor James invited Jack to see the engine room. Levers and gauges filled the space. "This lever controls our speed," James explained, pulling it gently. The train went a bit faster. "And this cord makes the whistle blow." Jack pulled it—CHOO CHOO! Everyone on the platform waved. Jack laughed with joy. He drew the locomotive with careful detail in his notebook.
In the cozy living room, Jack, looking tired, shows his notebook to a man with glasses and a blue shirt, who smiles proudly, while a woman with brown hair and green sweater sets the dinner table.
Back home, Jack was tired but happy. He showed Dad all his drawings. "I saw a tractor, a crane, a fire truck, an airplane, and a train!" he said proudly. Dad looked at each picture carefully. "These are wonderful drawings, Jack," he said. Jack yawned big. Mom made his favorite dinner. After eating, Jack could barely keep his eyes open. "Time for bed, machine expert," Mom said softly.
In a dimly lit bedroom, Jack, tucked in bed, gazes at his notebook, as his mother, a woman with brown hair and green sweater, kisses his forehead, a nightlight glowing softly.
In bed, Jack looked at his notebook one more time. Five machines, five amazing workers, all in one special day. "Which job do you like best?" Mom asked, tucking him in. Jack thought hard. "I like them all! Maybe I'll drive a different machine every day when I grow up." Mom kissed his forehead. Jack closed his eyes, dreaming of tractors plowing fields, cranes lifting high, fire trucks racing, planes soaring, and trains rolling down the tracks. Tomorrow he would draw more machines.
