Inside the cramped wooden chicken coop on a sunny morning, Mama Chicken is squashed against the wall while Walter Chicken paces anxiously under a narrow skylight. In the corner, Beneatha Chicken calmly reads a small open book amid scattered straw.
The Little Chicken family squeezed into their tiny coop. Mama Chicken, Walter Chicken, Beneatha Chicken, and baby Travis Chicken barely fit! "I'm squished!" clucked Travis. Walter paced back and forth. "We need more space," he grumbled. Beneatha read her book in the corner. One sunny morning, Mama Chicken received wonderful news. A distant cousin had sent her many, many seeds! The family gathered around excitedly. "What will we do with all these seeds?" asked Beneatha. Walter's eyes sparkled with ideas.
Outside the coop at midday, Mama Chicken stands in the barnyard sunlight, pressing a cloth pouch of shiny seeds into Walter Chicken’s wings. Walter gazes up hopefully, feathers drooping slightly beside an empty flour sack lying on the dirt.
"Mama, I have a plan!" Walter said excitedly. "My friends and I can start a bakery. We'll make the most delicious bread and earn more seeds!" Mama shook her head firmly. "No, Walter. I have other plans." Walter's feathers drooped sadly. Mama smiled at little Travis. "I'm buying a house for when Travis grows up. We'll ALL live there!" The house was in the duck neighborhood and had a BIG garden. "But Mama," protested Walter. Mama felt bad seeing Walter so sad. She gave him some remaining seeds. "Give these to Beneatha for school," she instructed.
At the coop doorway in late afternoon, Mama Chicken holds the door ajar, facing Duck who glares beneath bright yard light. Behind her, Walter Chicken slumps inside, ruffled feathers hanging as shadows stretch across straw.
Walter took the seeds and hurried out. Hours later, he returned looking terrible. His feathers were messy and his head hung low. "Walter, where are the seeds?" asked Mama Chicken. Walter's voice was tiny. "I... I lost them. All of them!" Mama gasped. Beneatha dropped her book. Even baby Travis stopped playing. "How could this happen?" cried Mama. Walter explained he tried to help his friends but made a mistake. Suddenly, KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK! Someone was at the door. Mama opened it slowly. A very angry-looking duck stood there, frowning deeply.
In the front garden of their new house at sunset, Mama Chicken stands proudly beside suitcases while Walter Chicken plants a tiny seedling near the porch. Beneatha Chicken peeks from a window box as distant ducks watch from the sidewalk.
"You chickens bought a house in OUR neighborhood," the duck said meanly. "We want to buy it back!" The duck continued, "We don't want chickens in our part of town!" Mama Chicken stood tall. She looked the duck right in the eye. "NO!" she said firmly. SLAM! Mama closed the door. Walter, Beneatha, and Travis gathered around her. "We're moving to our new house," Mama announced. The family packed their things. They moved into the big house with the wonderful garden. The ducks weren't friendly, but the family had each other and much more space. They felt hopeful together.
