In the bright school cafeteria at midday, Mimi sits at a lunch table sketching in a notebook, eyes wide with shy surprise, while Lily plops beside her smiling warmly. Sandwich halves rest on their trays under fluorescent lights.
Mimi sat alone at lunch, drawing in her notebook. A cheerful girl named Lily sat down beside her. "Hi! I love your drawing," Lily said with a bright smile. Mimi looked up, surprised. "Really? Thank you," she replied shyly. "Want to play at recess?" Lily asked. Mimi's face lit up. "Yes, I'd love that!" The two girls laughed together as they shared their sandwiches. By the end of lunch, they were already planning tomorrow's adventures. Mimi felt happy to have a new friend.
On the sunny school playground, Mimi sits motionless on a swing set, shoulders slumped, watching Lily in the distance kicking a red ball with other kids. Bright daylight casts long shadows across the sand.
The next day, Mimi waited for Lily at their usual spot. But Lily walked right past her with another girl. Mimi's heart sank. "Did I do something wrong?" she wondered. At recess, Mimi sat on the swings alone. She saw Lily playing kickball and felt left out. After school, Mimi walked home slowly, her eyes watering. "Maybe Lily doesn't want to be my friend anymore," she thought sadly. She didn't understand what had happened. The day felt very long and lonely.
Outside the school entrance in crisp morning light, Lily rushes toward Mimi with arms open, face anxious, while Mimi stands clutching a backpack, confused yet hopeful. Early sunlight glows on brick walls and fallen leaves.
The next morning, Lily ran up to Mimi. "Where were you yesterday? I looked everywhere!" Lily exclaimed. Mimi was confused. "You walked past me with someone else," she said quietly. Lily gasped. "That was my cousin visiting! I was bringing her to meet you, but you disappeared!" Understanding washed over Mimi. "Oh no! I thought you didn't want to be friends," Mimi admitted. Lily hugged her. "You're my best friend! I was so worried!" The girls realized they should have talked instead of assuming.
Inside a brightly lit art classroom, Mimi and Lily sit side by side at a paint-speckled table, smiling as they thread colorful beads onto twin friendship bracelets. Sunlight streams through tall windows, scattering rainbow reflections across their hands.
Mimi and Lily promised to always communicate honestly. "If something bothers us, we'll talk about it," Lily declared. Mimi nodded enthusiastically. "And we'll never jump to conclusions!" They made friendship bracelets together during art class. Each bracelet had special beads representing their promise. At recess, they invited other kids to join their games. When problems came up, they talked them through. Mimi learned that true friendship means trusting each other. "Best friends forever?" Lily asked, holding out her pinky. "Forever!" Mimi agreed, linking pinkies with her best friend.
