Midday sun blankets the outdoor playground; Khalil grins toward Andrew near the swings while Kaylee waves enthusiastically from the tall red slide’s summit.
Andrew walked to the playground with his best friend Khalil. The sun was shining bright. Kids were laughing and playing everywhere. "Let's play on the swings!" Khalil said with a big smile. Kaylee waved at them from the slide. "Come join me!" she called out. Andrew felt happy. He loved recess time. The three friends ran together across the soft grass. It was going to be a great day.
Bright afternoon at a shaded playground bench: Karim scowls while shoving Khalil’s blue backpack off the wooden seat, the bag frozen mid-air as Khalil watches sadly.
Suddenly, Karim walked up to Khalil. He had a mean look on his face. "Move out of my way," Karim said loudly. He pushed Khalil's backpack off the bench. It fell to the ground with a thud. Khalil's face looked sad. "Hey, that's not nice," Khalil said quietly. Karim just laughed. Andrew watched from nearby. His stomach felt funny. He didn't know what to do. Kaylee frowned and walked over to help Khalil pick up his things.
Morning sunlight on grassy playground; Kaylee hands Khalil his recovered backpack as Khalil reaches gratefully, while Andrew stands nearby staring down at his untied shoes.
Andrew wanted to help his friend. But his legs felt frozen. Karim was bigger and louder. "What if he picks on me too?" Andrew thought. His heart beat fast. Khalil looked at Andrew with hopeful eyes. Andrew looked down at his shoes. He felt bad inside. "I wish I was braver," Andrew whispered to himself. Kaylee picked up Khalil's backpack and gave it back to him. "Don't worry, Khalil," she said. Andrew wished he had helped too.
Late-afternoon light warms a quiet playground bench where Kaylee smiles gently at Andrew, who clutches the bench edge and looks up with hopeful eyes.
Later, Kaylee sat with Andrew on the bench. "You look worried," she said gently. Andrew nodded. "I wanted to help Khalil, but I was too scared," he admitted. Kaylee smiled at him. "Being scared is okay, Andrew. Everyone feels scared sometimes." Andrew looked up at her. "Really?" he asked. "Really," Kaylee said. "Being brave doesn't mean you're not scared. It means doing what's right even when you are scared." Andrew thought about her words. Maybe he could be brave too.
Under bright recess sun beside the sandbox, Karim looms over Khalil with an outstretched hand while Khalil clutches a shiny red apple tightly to his chest.
The next day at recess, Karim found Khalil again. "Give me your snack," Karim demanded. Khalil held his apple tightly. "No, it's mine," Khalil said bravely. Karim stepped closer and frowned. "I said give it to me!" he said louder. Other kids stopped playing and watched. Everyone looked nervous. Khalil's hands started to shake. Andrew saw everything happening. He remembered what Kaylee had said. His heart pounded, but he took a deep breath. "I can do this," Andrew told himself.
Sunlit playground blacktop: Andrew stands firmly facing Karim near faded hopscotch squares, Kaylee aligned beside him, both staring steadily as a loose semicircle of classmates watches behind.
Andrew walked straight toward Karim and Khalil. His legs felt wobbly but he kept going. "Stop, Karim," Andrew said in a clear voice. Karim turned around and looked surprised. "What did you say?" Karim asked. Andrew's voice got stronger. "I said stop. Leave Khalil alone. Picking on people is wrong." Khalil smiled at his friend. Kaylee came and stood next to Andrew. "He's right, Karim," Kaylee added. Andrew felt proud. He was being brave! Other kids started gathering around them. Everyone was watching now.
Clear midday sky over the swings; Andrew addresses Karim while Khalil steps forward with a hopeful smile, and Karim stares at the ground amid scattered wood-chip mulch.
More kids came over to stand with Andrew. "Yeah, stop being mean," said a girl from their class. "Bullying isn't cool," added another boy. Karim looked around at all the faces. He seemed confused and a little scared himself. "Everyone makes mistakes, but we should all be kind," Andrew said. Khalil stepped forward too. "You can play with us if you're nice," Khalil offered. Karim didn't say anything. He just stood there looking at the ground. Just then, their teacher Mrs. Lopez walked over to see what was happening.
Soft afternoon light near the climbing dome: Mrs. Lopez kneels to eye-level with Karim beside the wooden bench, Karim’s eyes glistening as he listens with slumped shoulders.
Mrs. Lopez looked at everyone kindly. "What's going on here?" she asked. Andrew explained what happened. Karim still looked at the ground. Mrs. Lopez knelt down by Karim. "Karim, can we talk?" she asked gently. Karim nodded slowly. Mrs. Lopez said, "Hurting others or taking their things isn't okay. How would you feel if someone did that to you?" Karim's eyes got watery. "I'd feel sad," he whispered. "Exactly," Mrs. Lopez said. "Everyone deserves kindness and respect. Do you understand?" Karim nodded again. "I'm sorry," he said quietly.
Sunny grass by the slide: Karim extends his hand in apology while Khalil smiles warmly and accepts the handshake, Andrew standing nearby with cheeks flushed in proud relief.
Karim turned to Khalil. "I'm sorry I was mean to you," he said. "I shouldn't have pushed your backpack or tried to take your snack." Khalil smiled. "I forgive you," Khalil said. Karim looked at Andrew. "Thanks for standing up to me. That was brave." Andrew felt his cheeks turn red. "Thanks," Andrew said. Mrs. Lopez smiled at everyone. "I'm proud of all of you. This playground should be a happy place for everyone." The kids nodded. "Can I play with you guys?" Karim asked shyly. Khalil nodded. "Sure! Let's all play together."
Bright midday light bathes the jungle gym; Karim smiles as he lifts a little kid toward the monkey bars, the child’s hands stretching eagerly for the first rung.
The friends played together for the rest of recess. They took turns on the swings and climbed on the jungle gym. Karim was kind and fair. He even helped a little kid reach the monkey bars. Andrew felt wonderful inside. He had been brave! Khalil gave Andrew a high five. "You're a great friend," Khalil said. Kaylee grinned. "I told you that you could do it!" When the bell rang, they all walked back to class together. The playground was a kinder place now. Andrew smiled all the way back, knowing he had found his courage.
