Outside a suburban house driveway on a sunny afternoon, the family car has just stopped. Elani, still strapped in her rear seat, points excitedly through the window while Gampi and Nana wave from the shaded wooden porch.
Elani bounced in her car seat. "Gampi! Nana!" she shouted happily. Dorian smiled at her daughter. "Yes, sweetie, we're going to visit them," she said. Austin drove down the sunny street. "And you'll see Jazzy, Cheese, and Salem too," he added. Elani clapped her hands. "Yay! Puppies and kitty!" The car pulled into the driveway. Elani could see Gampi and Nana waving from the porch. Her heart filled with joy.
In the sunlit doorway of the house, Gampi lifts Elani high with a broad smile. Nana leans in for a warm hug beside them, open front door and welcome mat framing the cheerful reunion.
Gampi opened the front door wide. "There's my favorite girl!" he said with a big smile. Elani ran into his arms. "Gampi!" she giggled as he lifted her up high. Nana came over for a hug too. "We missed you so much, sweetheart," Nana said, kissing her cheek. Dorian and Austin hugged Gampi and Nana. "Thanks for having us," Dorian said warmly. Everyone walked inside the cozy home together.
On the living-room carpet under morning light, Jazzy skids to a stop in front of Elani. Elani kneels, gently stroking the small gray dog’s fur as Jazzy licks her hand, tail a blurred wag.
A small gray dog ran toward Elani. "Woof! Woof!" barked Jazzy, wagging her tail fast. "Puppy!" Elani squealed with delight. She gently petted Jazzy's soft gray fur. Jazzy licked Elani's hand. "She remembers you," Gampi said, chuckling. Elani giggled as Jazzy spun in circles. "Jazzy happy!" Elani said. The little dog jumped and played around her feet. Elani laughed and laughed. This was so much fun already!
Inside the cozy living room lit by afternoon sun, Cheese trots over and drops a bright squeaky toy at Elani’s feet. Elani squeezes the toy while Jazzy and Cheese leap excitedly beside her, paws mid-air and ears flapping.
A fluffy white dog trotted over. "That's Cheese," Nana said, pointing. Cheese had the softest white fur Elani had ever seen. "Hi, Cheese!" Elani said, reaching out carefully. Cheese wagged her tail and sniffed Elani's hand. Then Cheese brought over a squeaky toy. "She wants to play with you," Austin explained. Elani squeezed the toy. Squeak! Squeak! Both dogs jumped excitedly. "Play! Play!" Elani laughed, tossing the toy gently.
Warm afternoon light filters onto a plush couch where Salem, charcoal gray and relaxed, lies stretched out. Elani stands beside the couch, touching Salem’s fur with one finger while the cat purrs and finishes a huge yawn.
Elani noticed a charcoal gray cat on the couch. "Kitty!" she whispered quietly. Salem the Russian Blue cat opened one eye slowly. "Be very gentle," Dorian reminded her daughter. Elani walked softly to the couch. She touched Salem's fur with one finger. Salem purred loudly, a rumbling sound. "She likes you," Nana said with a smile. Salem stretched and yawned big. Elani giggled at the funny yawn. "Silly kitty," she whispered.
In the brightly lit kitchen, Nana sets colorful plates of chocolate-chip cookies on the large wooden table. Opposite her, Elani sits eagerly on a high chair, biting into a cookie while Gampi pours milk into small cups beside them.
"Who wants cookies?" Nana asked cheerfully. "Me! Me!" Elani shouted, running to the kitchen. Gampi poured milk into small cups. Nana placed chocolate chip cookies on colorful plates. Elani sat at the big table. Jazzy and Cheese sat by her feet, hoping for crumbs. "No cookies for puppies," Austin said gently. Elani munched her cookie. "Yummy, Nana!" she said with a big smile. Everyone enjoyed the sweet treat together.
Under the bright midday sun in the fenced backyard, Elani runs across the grass with arms wide. Austin has just tossed a yellow tennis ball, and Cheese races past Elani to catch it mid-bounce, ears flying.
"Let's go outside!" Gampi said, opening the back door. Elani ran into the sunny backyard. Jazzy and Cheese raced after her, barking happily. "Catch me!" Elani giggled, running around. The dogs chased her in circles. Austin tossed a ball, and Cheese fetched it. Jazzy jumped trying to catch it too. Dorian and Nana watched from the porch. "She's having so much fun," Nana said. Gampi nodded. "Best day ever," he agreed warmly.
In the softly lit living room, Gampi stands by the doorway with hands over his eyes, counting aloud. Behind a big upholstered chair, Elani crouches with Jazzy beside her, both grinning as they prepare to spring out.
"Let's play hide and seek!" Elani suggested. Gampi covered his eyes and counted. "One, two, three..." he said slowly. Elani hid behind a big chair, giggling. Jazzy followed her, wagging her tail. "Ten! Ready or not, here I come!" Gampi called. He pretended not to see Elani right away. "Where could she be?" he wondered aloud. "Here!" Elani jumped out laughing. Gampi picked her up. "I found you!" Everyone clapped and cheered happily.
Evening lamplight glows around a rocking chair in the living room where Nana reads a colorful picture book. Elani sits on her lap pointing at the pages while Salem curls against them, eyes half-closed and purring.
Nana sat in the rocking chair. "Story time," she announced gently. Elani climbed onto her lap. Salem jumped up and curled beside them. Nana opened a picture book about friendly animals. "Once upon a time," Nana began reading. Elani pointed at pictures. "Doggy! Kitty!" she said excitedly. Jazzy and Cheese lay at their feet. Dorian and Austin listened nearby. Gampi smiled watching his family together. The story was magical and fun.
With evening lights glowing indoors, Gampi and Elani spin hand-in-hand in the center of the living room. A small speaker on a side table plays upbeat music as they grin widely, Elani’s dress twirling in mid-spin.
Gampi turned on happy music. "Dance party!" he announced, moving his arms. Elani jumped up and down. "Dance! Dance!" she shouted joyfully. Gampi held her hands and they spun around. Austin twirled Dorian across the room. Nana clapped along to the beat. Jazzy and Cheese ran in circles barking. Even Salem watched from the couch. Everyone laughed and danced together. "This is the best!" Elani giggled, spinning around and around happily.
Soft lamp glow bathes the couch where Nana cradles a sleepy Elani under a pastel blanket. Beside their legs, Salem sits upright purring, while framed family photos and darkened windows show the late-evening calm.
Elani yawned a big yawn. "Someone's getting tired," Dorian said softly. Elani rubbed her eyes. "No sleepy," she mumbled quietly. But she cuddled against Nana on the couch. Salem purred beside her. Jazzy and Cheese lay at her feet. "What a wonderful day," Nana whispered. Gampi covered Elani with a soft blanket. Austin and Dorian sat nearby, smiling. Elani's eyes closed slowly. She felt warm, safe, and so loved here.
At dusk in the driveway, Dorian holds a pajama-clad Elani near the open car door. Gampi bends forward for a final hug, the porch light glowing behind him as suitcases and Nana’s flower pots frame the farewell.
"We should head home," Austin said gently. Dorian carefully picked up sleepy Elani. "Say bye-bye," she whispered. "Bye, Gampi. Bye, Nana," Elani said softly. She waved at Jazzy, Cheese, and Salem too. "Come back soon, sweetheart," Gampi said, hugging her. Nana kissed her forehead. "We love you so much." They walked to the car together. Elani waved from her car seat. "Love you!" she called. What a perfect visit it had been!
