Morning light filters into the classroom where Makayla kneels on a colorful carpet, fingertip touching the sunny square on a bright weather chart by the wall. Ms. Bootland stands beside her smiling, while Emma sits cross-legged watching.
I hang my backpack on my special hook with my name. Ms. Bootland smiles at me. "Good morning, Makayla!" she says with her kind voice. I sit on the colorful carpet next to my friend Emma. We sing the good morning song together. Ms. Bootland shows us the weather chart. I raise my hand to point at the sunny picture. "Great job!" she says. My tummy feels happy and warm inside.
Makayla stacks wooden blocks into a tall wobbling tower on the classroom floor under bright ceiling lights. Ms. Bootland kneels opposite her, smiling and holding a spare block, as colorful bins line the block center shelves.
Ms. Bootland reads us a book about caterpillars. I love the fuzzy pictures! Then we go to centers. I choose the blocks with two other friends. We build a tall tower together. "Look how high!" I say. Ms. Bootland comes over. "You're working together so well," she tells us. When the tower falls, we all laugh. Ms. Bootland helps us start again. Building is my favorite!
Outside on the sunny playground, Makayla grips a blue swing seat while Ms. Bootland stands behind gently pushing. Afternoon light casts long shadows across the mulched ground and the nearby slide glints in the background.
We wash our hands and sit at our tables. I eat my crackers and apple slices. Ms. Bootland sits with us and asks about our towers. Outside, I run to the swings. The wind blows my hair. Ms. Bootland pushes me gently. "Higher!" I giggle. I feel like I'm flying! Then we play tag until the bell rings. My cheeks are pink and warm.
Soft afternoon sunlight filters through classroom windows as Makayla sits at a low table, coloring a giant block tower on white paper. Beside her, Ms. Bootland writes Makayla’s dictated words beneath the drawing, crayons scattered around.
After lunch, we lie on our mats for quiet time. Ms. Bootland reads another story in her soft voice. I feel sleepy and cozy. Then we draw pictures of our favorite part of the day. I draw the big tower. Ms. Bootland writes my words on my picture. When Mom comes, I show her everything. "See you tomorrow, Makayla!" Ms. Bootland waves. I can't wait!
