Maya zipped up her backpack and smiled at her dad. "I'm ready for our big hike!" she said. They started up the sunny mountain trail together. Birds chirped in the tall pine trees. "Stay close, Maya," Dad said. "This trail can be tricky." Maya nodded and followed carefully. The path wound between big rocks and colorful wildflowers. Everything seemed perfect. Then Maya heard a loud crack. Dad had stepped on loose rocks! He tumbled down and grabbed his ankle. "Ow! I think I twisted it," he groaned.

Maya rushed to her dad's side. "Are you okay?" she asked worriedly. Dad tried to stand but couldn't put weight on his foot. "I can't walk, Maya. You'll need to get help." Maya's heart pounded. She'd never hiked alone before. But Dad needed her. "I can do this," she said bravely. Dad handed her the map. "Follow the trail markers back down. Look for the ranger station. You're strong and smart, Maya. I believe in you." Maya took a deep breath and started down the path.

Maya walked carefully, watching for the red trail markers on the trees. The path seemed longer going down alone. She heard rustling in the bushes and froze. A friendly squirrel popped out, making her giggle nervously. "Just a squirrel," she whispered. Maya kept going, stepping over roots and around puddles. She remembered Dad's hiking lessons: stay on the trail, look for markers, keep moving forward. Finally, through the trees, she spotted a brown building. The ranger station! Maya started running. "Help! I need help!" she called out loudly.

Ranger Tom rushed outside. "What's wrong?" he asked kindly. Maya explained quickly about Dad's twisted ankle. "You were very brave coming down alone," Ranger Tom said. He grabbed his radio and first aid kit. "Let's go help your dad." They hiked up together on his ATV. Soon they found Dad sitting where Maya left him. "There's my hero!" Dad exclaimed. Ranger Tom wrapped Dad's ankle and helped him onto the ATV. On the ride down, Dad hugged Maya tight. "I'm so proud of you," he said. Maya smiled. She'd been scared, but she did it!
