Indoor morning classroom with sunlight through tall windows; Teacher stands beside the chalkboard introducing Tom. At front row desk, Tom covers his ears, eyes down, while Lilly leans forward whispering a gentle 'Hi.'
I’m Lilly, excited for a newcomer. Teacher smiles, 'Class, this is Tom.' Tom stares at shoes, very quiet. The bell clangs; he covers ears. I whisper, 'Hi,' but he doesn’t answer.
Same bright classroom a day later; open terrarium sits empty beside scattered bookshelves. Teacher announces Lizzy missing as Lilly kneels near the reading nook and Tom nods toward it, alert eyes on the curtained corner.
Next day, Teacher says, 'Lizzy is missing!' Our class checks boxes, shelves, corners. I ask Tom, 'Want to help?' He nods, looking toward the reading nook. Tom whispers, 'I heard scratching there yesterday.'
Dimly lit reading nook under a blanket of soft orange lamp glow; curtains half-parted reveal Lizzy blinking on a cushion. Wearing headphone muffs, Tom points excitedly while Lilly crouches beside him, smiling in quiet triumph.
Hallway noise rises, and Tom winces. Teacher quietly offers headphones; Tom relaxes. We tiptoe to the nook together. Tom points, 'Warm light means Lizzy nearby.' Behind the curtain, our bearded dragon blinks.
Afternoon sunlight fills the classroom; golden beams stripe the floor. Tom kneels beside the terrarium, hands gently cupping Lizzy, while Lilly stands close, beaming at their success.
Tom moves slowly, cupping his hands. I whisper, 'Easy, Lizzy. We’ve got you.' He breathes steady; Lizzy climbs in. Teacher smiles, 'Great teamwork, you two!' I grin, 'Different isn’t distant,' and Tom smiles.
