Sunny afternoon light fills Tio David's living room as Mateo kneels on the rug, smiling while stacking a tall Lego tower; Tio David sits beside him laughing, with adventure books on the couch and framed family photos behind.
Mateo loved visiting Tio David's house. They built tall Lego towers together. They read adventure books on the comfy couch. Tio David always knew the best stories. He made silly voices for every character. "You're my superhero, Tio!" Mateo said with a big smile. Tio David ruffled Mateo's hair. "And you're my favorite sidekick," he replied. Mateo noticed the house always smelled like fresh cookies. There were photos everywhere showing happy faces. It felt like the coziest place in the world.
Dusk in the warm kitchen: Tio Alex sprinkles treats toward Milo, who waits near his feet, while Tio David sets colorful taco plates on the table; overhead lights glow softly, salsa music playing from a small speaker on the counter.
Mateo noticed Tio Alex was always there too. He helped Tio David cook dinner in the kitchen. They laughed at the same jokes. Milo the cat purred on Tio Alex's lap. "Come help us make tacos, Mateo!" Tio Alex called. Mateo watched them dance to music while stirring the pot. They moved together like they knew each other's next step. Tio Alex gave Milo treats while Tio David set the table. "They do everything together," Mateo thought. It reminded him of how his mom and dad worked as a team.
Morning sunlight streams across the breakfast table where Mateo sits opposite Tio David and Tio Alex; both uncles smile warmly, coffee mugs in hand, while a half-finished stack of pancakes and a shared bowl of fruit rest between them.
"Tio David, why do you and Tio Alex live together?" Mateo asked at breakfast. Tio David smiled warmly. "Well, Mateo, I found my special person. Just like your mom found your dad." Tio Alex added, "We make each other happy every day." Mateo thought about this. "Like best friends?" he asked. "Even better," Tio David said. "Tio Alex makes my heart feel brave. He makes our house feel like home." Mateo watched Milo curl up between both uncles. "So you're a family?" Mateo asked. "Exactly right," they said together.
Evening lamplight warms the dining room as Tio David wraps an arm around Tio Alex beside the bustling dinner table; Mateo sits nearby, smiling proudly, with platters of tacos and bowls of salsa spread across colorful tablecloth.
That evening, everyone came for dinner. Mateo's parents, his uncles, and even Grandma arrived. Milo weaved between everyone's legs. The table was full of laughter and food. "Family isn't about looking the same," Mateo announced proudly. "It's about who shows up for you!" Everyone smiled at his words. Tio David hugged Tio Alex. Mateo's dad hugged his mom. Grandma hugged everyone. Mateo looked around the happy room. He understood now. Love made them all family. And this house was full of love.
