Pip the Frog crouches beneath a huge, drooping burdock leaf, his legs pulled tight to his body. His eyes are clenched shut, and a single cold water droplet clings to the leaf edge. The marsh beyond is a shadowy, moonlit blur.
Pip the Frog loved Lilypad Hollow during the day. He hopped on lily pads and chased dragonflies. But when the sun went down, everything changed. The marsh looked strange and scary. Pip would hurry to his hiding spot under a big burdock leaf. The leaf was cold and damp. Pip pulled his legs close and shut his eyes tight. He wished he was brave like the crickets who sang all night. But the darkness always made his heart thump fast.
A tiny firefly named Flit balances on Pip’s nose, casting a warm golden glow. Pip opens one wide eye, his green face caught between fear and hope. The surrounding darkness fades into soft focus.
One evening, something tickled Pip's nose. He opened one eye. A small firefly was sitting there, glowing softly. "Hello! I'm Flit," said the firefly. "Why are you hiding?" Pip's voice shook. "The dark is too scary." Flit's light blinked cheerfully. "The dark isn't scary. It just needs a little light to show the way. Come with me!" Pip's heart thumped, but he looked at Flit's warm glow. Maybe, just maybe, he could be brave tonight.
Thick fog sweeps across the marsh, turning reeds into pale silhouettes. Pip’s eyes widen in alarm, while Flit hovers beside him, blinking a steady pale-yellow pulse that cuts a small circle in the gray.
Pip hopped slowly behind Flit's glowing light. White jasmine flowers opened under the stars, smelling wonderful. Silver fish jumped and splashed in the water. Crickets sang their cheerful songs all around. "It's beautiful!" Pip whispered. Then thick mist rolled across the marsh. Everything turned gray and foggy. Pip couldn't see anything. His fear rushed back. "Flit, where are you?" he called. Flit blinked his light in a steady rhythm. Blink, blink, blink. "I'm right here, friend," Flit said softly.
Dozens of fireflies drift through the misty marsh, their lights sparkling like scattered diamonds. Pip stands at the water’s edge, gazing upward in wonder as the glowing swarm turns the darkness into a magical ceiling.
Flit kept blinking his steady light. Then something amazing happened. Other fireflies began to answer. Blink, blink, blink. They came from everywhere. Soon dozens of fireflies filled the marsh with twinkling lights. It looked like scattered diamonds floating in the mist. Pip stared in wonder. The dark wasn't empty at all. It was full of beauty and friends. "Thank you, Flit," Pip said happily. From that night on, Pip never hid again. Every evening, he met Flit at the water's edge to light up the darkness together.
