Inside a bright morning bedroom, Gabriela wearing a white shirt, red skirt, and tiny red-and-white pin leans on the windowsill, grinning at countless flags lining the street outside while soft sunlight filters through lace curtains.
Gabriela woke up excited on May 2nd. Today was Polish Flag Day! She ran to the window and saw white and red flags everywhere. Her street looked beautiful. "Mama, can I wear my white shirt and red skirt today?" Gabriela asked. Her mother smiled. "Of course! That's perfect for Flag Day." Gabriela dressed quickly. She put a special red and white pin on her shirt. "I can't wait to learn more about our flag!" she said happily.
In a sunny classroom, a smiling teacher with short brown hair and a navy dress stands beside a hanging Polish flag, gesturing toward the white eagle emblem, while Gabriela sits front-row, eyes wide, hands folded on her desk.
At school, Gabriela's teacher told an amazing story. "Long ago, a man named Lech was looking for a home for his people," the teacher began. "He saw a beautiful white eagle flying against a red sunset." Gabriela listened carefully. "Lech thought it was a special sign! He made the white eagle his symbol on a red shield." The teacher pointed to the flag. "That's why our flag is white on top and red on bottom!" Gabriela thought the story was wonderful.
Under afternoon light in the classroom, Gabriela raises her hand as a smiling teacher with short brown hair and a navy dress points to white and red swatches on the blackboard, colored paper scattered across the front table.
"The colors have special meanings," the teacher continued. "White stands for peace and purity, like the eagle's feathers." Gabriela raised her hand. "What does red mean?" she asked. "Red stands for courage and bravery, like the beautiful sunset," the teacher explained. "Together, they show what Poland values most." Gabriela felt proud. She looked at her red and white outfit. "I'm wearing courage and peace!" she told her friend. Her friend giggled and pointed to her own white and red clothes. "Me too!"
In a sunlit kitchen, Gabriela proudly lifts her homemade red-and-white paper flag bearing a sketched white eagle, while her mother with kind eyes leans over a table scattered with scissors, glue, and colored paper scraps.
After school, Gabriela made her own flag at home. She glued red paper to the bottom of white paper. Then she drew a white eagle in the middle. "This is beautiful, Gabriela!" her mother said. They hung it in the window next to their big flag. Gabriela and her family walked to the town parade. Everyone wore red and white. Flags waved everywhere. "Happy Flag Day!" people called to each other. Gabriela smiled. She loved celebrating her Polish heritage. It was the best May 2nd ever!
