Outdoor wind farm at sunset, orange sky behind tall turbine towers. Conservation Biologist Justin G. Boyles kneels on gravel smiling (facing the reader) at hovering Batty, while Data Scientist Anastasiia Sobchenko holds a portable computer. Dr. Erin F. Baerwald and Researcher Dr. Álvarez-Castañeda look on warmly.
As the sun set, four scientists gathered at a wind farm. Justin, the conservation biologist, adjusted his equipment while Anastasiia, the data scientist, checked her computer. Dr. Baerwald, the ecologist, scanned the sky as Dr. Álvarez-Castañeda, the mammal researcher, smiled. Suddenly, a small bat swooped down. "Hello!" chirped Batty. "I'm Batty, and these tall towers confuse my friends and me." Justin knelt down kindly. "We're here to help, Batty. Wind turbines make clean energy, but we need to keep bats like you safe." Batty's ears perked up with curiosity.
Nighttime beside a silent wind turbine, the portable monitor glows blue. Data Scientist Anastasiia Sobchenko points at graph-lines for hovering Batty, while Ecoogist Dr. Erin F. Baerwald watches, handheld flashlight casting soft light on their focused faces.
Dr. Baerwald explained gently, "Batty, wind turbines spin fast and create pressure changes that can hurt bats." Anastasiia showed Batty her data screen. "See these numbers? They tell us when bats fly most." Dr. Álvarez-Castañeda added, "We've studied bat behavior for years." Batty looked worried. "But we hunt insects at night! How can we stay safe?" Justin smiled warmly. "That's exactly what we're researching. We have solutions!" Batty felt hopeful hearing this.
Under starry night at the wind farm, turbine blades turn slowly. Data Scientist Anastasiia Sobchenko taps her laptop, while Researcher Dr. Sergio T. Álvarez-Castañeda displays a purple-painted blade piece beside a small ultrasonic speaker; Batty hovers watching.
"Watch this!" said Anastasiia, typing commands. The turbine blades slowed down. "We can program turbines to stop during high bat activity times." Dr. Baerwald pointed to ultrasonic devices. "These make sounds that guide bats away safely." Dr. Álvarez-Castañeda showed painted turbine blades. "Purple paint helps bats see turbines better!" Batty flew excited loops. "These ideas are amazing!" Justin nodded. "Clean energy AND safe bats—that's teamwork!" The scientists cheered together as stars appeared overhead.
Pre-dawn at the moonlit wind farm, twenty bats, led by Batty, swirl safely around slowly turning turbines. Ecoogist Dr. Erin F. Baerwald and Conservation Biologist Justin G. Boyles stand on grassy ground jotting notes on clipboards, soft pink horizon emerging.
Batty called friends over. Twenty bats flew safely around the slower turbines. "It works!" squeaked Batty happily. The scientists took notes under moonlight. "These solutions will help wind farms everywhere," said Dr. Baerwald proudly. Anastasiia's data confirmed fewer bats near active turbines. "Science helps humans AND nature," Justin said. Dr. Álvarez-Castañeda smiled. "Batty, you helped us too!" As dawn approached, Batty waved goodbye. "Thank you for protecting my night!" The team waved back, knowing they'd powered a better future.
