In Rose's poster-covered bedroom at bedtime, warm lamp light glows. Rose sits cross-legged on her bed, smiling while reading a meerkat book, with Squeaky the plush meerkat propped against her pillow.
Rose loved meerkats more than anything. Her room had meerkat posters on every wall. She read meerkat books before bed. She even had a stuffed meerkat named Squeaky. "Mom, can I please have a real meerkat?" Rose asked every day. Her mother smiled and said, "We'll see, sweetheart." Rose drew pictures of meerkats. She pretended Squeaky could talk. More than anything, she wished for a meerkat friend.
In the brightly lit kitchen, Mom and Dad stand close at the counter whispering, faces excited; just outside the doorway, Max presses his ear to the wood, wide-eyed with a mischievous grin.
Rose's parents whispered in the kitchen. Her big brother Max listened at the door. "Saturday is perfect," Dad said quietly. Mom nodded and smiled. Rose walked in and they stopped talking. "What's going on?" Rose asked. "Nothing, honey," Mom said with a wink. Max grinned but wouldn't tell. Rose wondered what the secret could be. She hoped it was about meerkats!
Morning sun streams into the family kitchen as Mom flips animal-shaped pancakes onto a plate. Rose, beaming in her yellow dress with pockets, stands beside Dad at the table, clutching Squeaky and smelling the steam.
Saturday morning, Rose woke up early. Mom made pancakes shaped like animals. "Get dressed in your favorite outfit," Dad said cheerfully. Rose put on her yellow dress with pockets. "Where are we going?" she asked excitedly. "It's a surprise!" Max sang out. Rose bounced with curiosity. The family piled into the car. Rose clutched Squeaky tight. "I love surprises!" she squealed.
Outside the zoo gates under bright morning sky, Rose jumps excitedly beside Mom and Dad. A colorful 'City Zoo' sign arches over the iron gates, the family car parked nearby.
The car stopped at big gates. Rose saw a colorful sign. "The zoo!" she shouted with joy. Mom and Dad laughed at her excitement. Max pointed to a special map. "Look where we're going first," he said. Rose's eyes grew wide. The map showed the meerkat exhibit! "Really? We're seeing meerkats?" Rose gasped. Her parents nodded. Rose jumped up and down happily.
At the outdoor meerkat exhibit, midday sunlight glints on the viewing glass where Rose presses her nose, eyes wide with wonder. Behind the glass, several meerkats stand upright on sandy rocks, one digging beside a tiny pup.
Rose ran to the meerkat area. Behind the glass, meerkats stood on their back legs. They looked around like tiny guards. "They're even cuter than my books!" Rose whispered. One meerkat dug in the sand. Another climbed a rock tower. A baby meerkat played with its mom. Rose pressed her nose to the glass. "Hi, meerkats!" she said softly. They were absolutely perfect.
Beside the meerkat enclosure on a sunny walkway, a smiling zookeeper in a khaki uniform kneels, gesturing toward the animals. Rose stands opposite her, attentive and eager, afternoon light shining on their faces and the enclosure sign.
A zookeeper walked over smiling. "Would you like to learn about meerkats?" she asked. Rose nodded so hard her hair bounced. "Meerkats live in families called mobs," the keeper explained. "They take turns watching for danger." Rose listened to every word. "Do they make good pets?" Rose asked hopefully. The keeper shook her head gently. "They need special care and lots of space," she said.
Still at the glass under soft pavilion shade, a smiling zookeeper in a khaki uniform points to playing meerkats while Rose rests her hands on the railing, thoughtful yet curious, gentle late-morning light illuminating the sandy habitat.
The keeper continued her lesson. "Meerkats are happiest with their families in the wild or here at the zoo." Rose felt a little sad. "But you can visit them anytime," the keeper added brightly. Rose thought about this carefully. The meerkats did look happy together. They played and groomed each other. "I guess they belong here," Rose said slowly. The keeper smiled proudly. Rose began to understand.
During midday feeding at the meerkat exhibit, a smiling zookeeper in a khaki uniform tosses insects over the glass. Rose giggles with delight beside Max, who snaps photos with a camera, while meerkats scramble across sunlit sand below.
"Would you like to watch feeding time?" the keeper asked. Rose's face lit up again. The keeper brought out a bucket of treats. She tossed insects into the exhibit. The meerkats scrambled and searched excitedly. They stood up, sniffing the air. One found a treat and chirped happily. Rose giggled at their funny movements. "They're so silly!" she laughed. Max took photos of everything.
On the wooden observation deck in late afternoon glow, Rose points toward a sentinel meerkat while Dad wraps an encouraging arm around her shoulders. Beside them stands a smiling zookeeper in a khaki uniform, ready to explain the volunteer program.
Rose watched the meerkats for a long time. She noticed how they worked together. One always stood guard while others ate. "They're like a team," Rose told her family. Dad put his arm around her. "Just like our family is a team," he said. Rose smiled at that idea. "Can we become meerkat helpers?" she asked the keeper. "We have a junior volunteer program!" the keeper replied.
Inside the brightly lit zoo gift shop, shelves packed with plush animals, Rose proudly holds up a shiny junior zookeeper badge at the checkout counter. Max stands beside her offering a meerkat guidebook, while Mom smiles approvingly behind them.
After visiting other animals, they stopped at the gift shop. Mom let Rose pick one special item. Rose saw meerkat toys, shirts, and books. She chose a junior zookeeper badge. "I want to learn more about all animals," she announced. Her parents beamed with pride. Max bought her a meerkat guidebook too. Rose hugged it close. She had a new dream now.
In the backseat of the moving car during golden afternoon light, Rose enthusiastically flips through her new meerkat guidebook, mouth mid-sentence. Mom turns from the front passenger seat smiling, while Dad's eyes remain on the road ahead.
In the car, Rose talked nonstop. "Did you see how the baby meerkat played? And the way they stood up?" She flipped through her new guidebook. "There's so much to learn," she said happily. Mom turned around smiling. "So you're not sad about not having a pet meerkat?" she asked. Rose shook her head. "They're perfect right where they are," she declared wisely.
Nighttime moonlight filters into Rose's bedroom, casting soft blues on walls covered with meerkat posters. Rose sleeps peacefully, hugging Squeaky under her blanket, while her shiny junior zookeeper badge rests upright on the dresser.
That night, Rose put her new badge on her dresser. She hugged Squeaky tight in bed. "I saw real meerkats today," she whispered to him. Her meerkat posters looked even better now. "And I'll see them again soon," she added. Rose closed her eyes, remembering the wonderful day. She dreamed of helping animals at the zoo. It had been the best surprise ever. Rose smiled in her sleep.
