Inside the brightly lit classroom, Khloe sits at her desk clutching a pencil beside a crumpled math worksheet, brow furrowed. Teacher leans over from the aisle, gentle smile and open palms, morning sunlight streaming through windows.
Khloe sat at her desk feeling frustrated. Her math worksheet seemed too hard. Her hands felt tight. Her heart beat fast. "I want to run away!" she thought. Teacher noticed Khloe looked upset. "Khloe, I see you're having big feelings," Teacher said gently. "It's okay to feel frustrated sometimes. Everyone does. But running away or throwing things won't help us feel better. Let's learn some better ways together."
At a small round table in the same classroom, afternoon light spills across a colorful feelings chart that Teacher holds between them. Khloe sits opposite, pointer finger on the 'frustrated' face, eyes earnest as Teacher smiles encouragingly.
Teacher sat beside Khloe. "When we have big feelings, our bodies tell us," she explained. "We might feel hot, or our muscles get tight." Khloe nodded. That's how she felt! "These feelings are okay," Teacher continued. "But we need safe ways to handle them." Teacher showed Khloe a feelings chart. "First, we name our feeling. Are you frustrated? Angry? Overwhelmed?" "Frustrated," Khloe said quietly. "Good job naming it!" Teacher smiled.
In the classroom’s calm corner lined with soft pillows, warm midday sunlight filters through curtains as Teacher kneels beside Khloe. Both press hands to bellies, eyes closed in synchronized deep breaths; a bright yellow stress ball rests on the rug.
"Let's learn some tools," Teacher said. She showed Khloe how to take deep breaths. "Breathe in slowly, then out slowly." They practiced together. "You can also ask for a break in our calm corner," Teacher explained. "Or squeeze a stress ball. Or draw your feelings." Khloe tried the breathing. Her body felt calmer. "When I need help, I can use my words and ask you," Khloe said. "Exactly!" Teacher replied proudly.
During morning reading time at the classroom book nook, Khloe sits cross-legged holding a storybook, lips parted from a calming exhale. Raising one hand politely, she smiles while Teacher approaches with a proud nod, sunlight falling across the shelves.
The next day, Khloe felt frustrated again during reading. But this time, she remembered her tools. She took three deep breaths. "Teacher, I need help please," she said calmly. Teacher came over and helped her. Khloe felt proud. She didn't run away or throw anything! "You used your coping skills!" Teacher said warmly. "I'm so proud of you." Khloe smiled. She could handle big feelings now. She had tools that really worked.
