Inside a small bedroom stacked with taped cardboard boxes, afternoon light slants through a single window. Storm sits cross-legged on the floor, hugging Mr. Cuddles tightly while gazing at the unfamiliar walls.
Storm looked at the boxes in her new room. California was so far away from Georgia. "I am scared," she said softly. She hugged Mr. Cuddles very tight. The new house felt very big.
Nighttime lamplight glows softly across the same bedroom. Storm lies under a quilt holding Mr. Cuddles against her chest, eyes closed in calm determination.
Mr. Cuddles squeezed back in her arms. "Be brave, Storm," the bear seemed to say to her heart. "You can do big things." Storm took a deep breath. She closed her eyes to sleep.
Morning sun fills the bedroom mirror with gold. Storm, smiling at her reflection, tightens bright sneakers beside a neatly made bed.
The sun woke Storm up early the next morning. She put on her favorite outfit. "I am ready," she whispered to the mirror. She tied her shoes tight. It was time for school.
Outside the stone-faced school that rises like a castle, early light catches yellow buses zooming past the curb. Storm pauses halfway up the wide steps, gripping backpack straps and staring at the towering doors.
The school building looked like a giant castle. Yellow buses drove by fast on the street. Storm held her backpack straps. She walked up the steps slowly. Her heart beat very fast.
Just inside the bright classroom doorway, Ms. Rainbow with warm dark eyes kneels slightly and extends a welcoming hand. Storm stands clutching her backpack, relief flickering across her small face.
A nice lady opened the classroom door. "Hello, I am Ms. Rainbow," she smiled warmly. She had kind, dark eyes. "Welcome to first grade, Storm." Storm felt a little better inside.
Under fluorescent ceiling lights, rows of tiny desks face a colorful board. Ms. Rainbow gestures toward Storm at the front; Storm waves shyly, shoulders straightening as curious classmates watch.
Inside, many kids sat at little desks. Ms. Rainbow waved her hand gently. "Class, meet our new friend." Storm waved back shyly. Standing tall felt hard but good.
Bright midday sun bathes the playground slide. Storm stands alone near its ladder while children playing tag blur in the background, her hands clasped and face hopeful yet hesitant.
The bell rang for recess time. Kids ran outside to play tag in the sun. Storm stood near the slide all alone. Then, a girl walked over. It was Mia.
Beside the same slide under clear sky, Mia approaches with a wide grin. Mia extends an inviting hand and Storm nods, a small smile forming as sunlight sparkles on the sand.
Mia had a big, bright smile on her face. "Do you want to play?" she asked nicely. Storm nodded her head yes. "I am Mia!" the girl chirped happily.
At the jungle gym framed by bright blue bars, Storm and Mia perch on the highest platform, arms spread like captains. Below, the tanbark 'lava' glows in afternoon sun, emphasizing their playful peril.
They climbed the jungle gym together. "We are explorers!" shouted Mia. Storm laughed out loud with her new friend. They pretended the ground was lava. It was so much fun.
Inside the art corner of the classroom, Storm and Mia sit side by side coloring a rainbow picture. Ms. Rainbow leans over their desk, pressing a shiny gold sticker onto Storm's page under warm afternoon light.
The school day went by very fast. Storm colored a nice picture with Mia. Ms. Rainbow gave Storm a gold sticker. "Good job today," the teacher said.
Along a quiet suburban sidewalk glowing with late-day sunshine, Storm strides home swinging her backpack. Her face beams with a triumphant smile as leafy shadows dapple the pavement.
Storm walked home with a giant smile. She could not wait to tell her mom everything. California was not so scary anymore. She had a new best friend named Mia.
In the darkened bedroom lit only by moonlight through blinds, Storm snuggles beneath blankets, hugging Mr. Cuddles close. Her eyes close peacefully while the bear's stitched face seems to smile back.
That night, Storm hugged Mr. Cuddles tight. "I did it!" she cheered safely in bed. "I knew you could," the bear thought. Storm drifted off to sweet dreams.
