Tom woke up excited. Today he would ride the city bus all by himself! His older cousin Luca had promised to meet him downtown. Mom helped Tom pack his backpack with a snack and his bus fare. She gave him a city map with the route marked in red. Tom studied it carefully. He would take the Number Seven bus. Mom smiled and said he was ready for this adventure.

Tom walked to the corner bus stop. A blue sign showed the Number Seven. He checked his watch like Mom taught him. The bus would come in five minutes. Tom stood back from the curb, staying safe. An elderly woman waited too. She smiled at Tom. Soon they heard the rumble of the approaching bus. Tom felt butterflies in his stomach but stood tall and ready.

The big yellow bus stopped with a whoosh. The doors opened wide. Tom let the elderly woman board first, being polite. Then he climbed the steps carefully, holding the rail. He showed his fare to the driver, who nodded kindly. The driver said to find a seat quickly. Tom looked down the aisle. Where should he sit? The bus started moving before he decided!

Tom wobbled as the bus rolled forward. He grabbed a pole to steady himself. Empty seats filled the middle section. Tom chose one by the window so he could watch the city. He sat down and put his backpack on his lap. The seat was bouncy! Tom buckled the safety belt. Now he felt secure and could enjoy the ride through town.

Buildings and shops passed outside Tom's window. He saw a bakery with colorful cupcakes displayed. A park with children on swings whizzed by. Tom pressed his nose to the glass. The bus stopped and started at red lights. More passengers got on and off. Tom remembered he needed to count the stops. This was stop number two already!

The bus hit a pothole with a big bump! Tom bounced in his seat. His backpack almost slipped to the floor. He caught it just in time. Other passengers laughed good-naturedly. The driver apologized over the speaker. Tom giggled too. Even bumpy moments were part of the adventure! He held his backpack tighter and continued watching for landmarks on his map.

At the next stop, a young boy got on with his mother. The boy looked nervous, even more than Tom had felt. Tom smiled at him encouragingly. The boy sat across the aisle. Tom showed him how to hold the seat in front when the bus moved. The boy smiled back gratefully. Tom felt proud. He was already becoming a bus-riding expert! Helping others felt good.

Tom pulled out his map again. He had counted six stops so far. Mom had marked that he needed the eighth stop, right at City Hall. Two more to go! Tom watched carefully out the window. Each stop had a sign he could read. Stop seven was Market Street. One more! Tom stood up and moved toward the door, holding the rail tightly.

The bus slowed down at stop number eight. Tom saw the big City Hall building with its clock tower. Perfect! He pressed the yellow tape that said "Stop Requested." A bell dinged. The driver began to pull over. Tom felt excited and nervous together. He was almost at his destination! He checked that he had his backpack and stood ready by the door.

The bus doors opened with a hiss. Tom carefully stepped down, one step at a time. He held the rail until both feet were on the sidewalk. The bus driver waved goodbye. Tom waved back and said thank you. The bus pulled away with a rumble. Tom stood proudly on the sidewalk. He had done it! Now to find Luca at their meeting spot.

Tom walked toward City Hall's big fountain. There stood Luca with his short brown hair, waving enthusiastically! Tom ran over, grinning widely. Luca gave him a high five. "You made it! How was your first solo bus ride?" Luca asked. Tom told him about the bumpy pothole and helping the nervous boy. Luca listened with pride. "You're a real city traveler now!" Luca declared.

Luca and Tom got ice cream to celebrate. Tom felt different now, more grown-up and confident. He had ridden the bus by himself! He knew how to wait safely, board carefully, count stops, and get off at the right place. Luca promised they would ride the bus home together. Tom was already looking forward to his next bus adventure. Independence felt wonderful and exciting!
