Outside the big red school building on a sunny morning, Elani in a blue dress grips Mom's hand at the bottom of the steps. Mom kneels slightly, smiling reassuringly, while other children file inside in the background.
Elani woke up early. Today was her first day at a new school. Her tummy felt funny, like butterflies were flying inside. Mom helped her put on her favorite blue dress. "You'll do great," Mom said with a smile. Elani wasn't so sure. She held Mom's hand tight as they walked to the big red building. Other kids were going inside. Elani took a deep breath. "I can do this," she whispered.
In the bright, colorful classroom doorway, Miss Rosa with kind eyes bends toward shy Elani, who stands clutching her backpack strap. Morning sunlight streams through windows onto tables of crayons, shelves of books, and a vibrant alphabet rug.
The classroom was bright and colorful. Elani stood at the door, looking inside. There were tables with crayons, books on shelves, and a big rug with alphabet letters. A teacher with kind eyes walked over. "Hello! You must be Elani," she said warmly. "I'm Miss Rosa." Elani nodded quietly. Her heart was beating fast. Miss Rosa pointed to a table. "Would you like to sit there?" Elani walked slowly to the empty chair.
At a sun-lit classroom table, Elani sits alone with folded hands and watery eyes, staring downward. Nearby, a girl with pigtails stacks colorful blocks while two boys huddle over a puzzle on the carpet.
Elani sat down and looked around. The other children were talking and laughing together. They already knew each other. Elani felt very small and alone. She folded her hands on the table. A girl with pigtails played with blocks nearby. Two boys shared a puzzle in the corner. Everyone seemed happy except Elani. She wished Mom was still here. A tear started to form in her eye. She blinked it away quickly.
Inside the classroom under warm overhead lights, Maya with brown curly hair slides onto the chair beside Elani, grinning broadly. Elani turns toward her, eyes wide with surprise, their crayons and blank paper lying untouched between them.
"Hi! I'm Maya!" A girl with brown curly hair sat down next to Elani. She had a big smile. "Is this your first day?" Maya asked. Elani nodded. "It's okay to be nervous," Maya said. "I was nervous on my first day too." Elani looked at Maya with surprise. "Really?" she asked quietly. "Really! But then I made friends and it got fun," Maya said. "Want to be friends?" Elani felt her heart warm up. "Yes, please," she said softly.
On the alphabet rug during morning circle, Miss Rosa sits cross-legged facing the group, daylight spilling through classroom windows. Elani settles beside Maya, who gently squeezes her hand, colorful picture cards piled at Miss Rosa's feet.
Miss Rosa called everyone to the big rug. "Circle time!" she announced cheerfully. All the children sat in a circle. Maya patted the spot next to her, and Elani sat down. "Today we'll share our favorite things," Miss Rosa said. One by one, kids talked about toys, animals, and colors. Elani's tummy felt funny again. What if she said something silly? Maya squeezed her hand gently. That made Elani feel a little braver. Soon it would be her turn.
Under bright classroom lights, Elani sits upright on the rug, cheeks flushed as she tells the circle about drawing flowers and butterflies. Miss Rosa beams encouragingly beside her while Maya claps softly, other children watching attentively.
"Elani, would you like to share?" Miss Rosa asked with an encouraging smile. Elani's cheeks felt warm. Everyone was looking at her. "I... I like drawing," she said quietly. "What do you like to draw?" Miss Rosa asked. Elani thought for a moment. "Flowers and butterflies," she answered, a bit louder this time. "That's wonderful!" Miss Rosa said. "I love butterflies too!" Maya added excitedly. Other kids smiled and nodded. Elani felt herself smile back. Maybe this wasn't so scary after all.
At a small classroom table lit by midday sun, Maya demonstrates piercing a juice box with its straw, leaning forward in concentration. Elani, smiling proudly, pushes her straw through on the second try, crackers and apple slices spread between them.
After circle time, Miss Rosa brought out snacks. There were crackers, apple slices, and juice boxes. "You can sit anywhere," she said. Maya grabbed Elani's hand. "Sit with me!" she said happily. They sat at a small table together. Maya showed Elani how to poke the straw into the juice box. "Like this!" she demonstrated. Elani tried and got it on the second attempt. "I did it!" she said proudly. They both giggled. Sharing snacks with a friend was much more fun.
Afternoon light streams across the art table where Elani carefully colors a pink-and-yellow butterfly above bright flowers. Beside her, Maya, tongue between teeth in focus, sketches a purple cat; scattered crayons and markers fill the tabletop.
Miss Rosa set out paper, crayons, and markers on each table. "Today we'll draw pictures of our favorite things," she announced. Elani's eyes lit up. She loved drawing! Maya picked up a purple crayon. "I'm drawing a cat," she said. Elani chose pink and yellow. She carefully drew a big butterfly. She added flowers underneath. Maya leaned over to look. "That's so pretty!" she said. Elani beamed. "Your cat is cute too!" For the first time today, Elani forgot to feel nervous.
On the sunny playground, Elani soars forward on a swing, hair flying, while Maya on the neighboring seat teaches her to pump legs. The metal frame casts long shadows across wood chips and bright slides in the background.
"Time for the playground!" Miss Rosa said. Everyone lined up at the door. Elani and Maya held hands as they walked outside. The playground had swings, slides, and a sandbox. "Let's go on the swings!" Maya suggested. They ran to the swings together. Maya showed Elani how to pump her legs to go higher. "Whee!" Elani squealed as she swung up high. The wind felt nice on her face. She could see the whole playground from up here. Being brave was fun!
In the warm afternoon sandbox, Leo guards a half-built sandcastle, brows furrowed, as Maya kneels beside him offering a plastic bucket. Elani, holding a tiny shovel, waits hopefully; colorful towers and walls begin to rise between them.
After swinging, the girls went to the sandbox. Another boy was already there building a castle. "Can we play too?" Maya asked. The boy frowned. "This is my castle," he said. Elani felt worried. Would he be mean? Maya smiled kindly. "We can help make it bigger!" she suggested. The boy thought for a moment. "Okay," he said slowly. "I'm Leo." Together, they built towers and walls. "This is the best castle ever!" Leo said happily. Elani smiled. Problems could have nice solutions.
Back on the cozy classroom rug under soft afternoon light, Miss Rosa holds up a large picture book open to a bear illustration. Elani sits cross-legged upfront, eyes shining, with Maya leaning against her shoulder and other children gathered loosely.
Back inside, everyone sat on the rug again. Miss Rosa held up a big picture book. "Story time!" she announced. The story was about a little bear starting school. Elani listened carefully. The bear was nervous too, just like her! But by the end, the bear had made friends. "Did you like the story?" Miss Rosa asked. Many hands shot up. Elani slowly raised her hand too. "It's like me," she said. "Yes, it is," Miss Rosa said warmly. "And look how brave you've been today."
In the late-afternoon classroom doorway, Mom crouches to hug a beaming Elani, backpack slung over her shoulders. Across the tidy room, Maya waves enthusiastically goodbye; golden sunlight filters through high windows onto cubbies and stacked chairs.
Mom came to pick up Elani. "How was your first day?" she asked. Elani's face broke into a huge smile. "I made a friend! Her name is Maya!" Maya waved from across the room. "Bye, Elani! See you tomorrow!" Elani waved back happily. As they walked home, Elani told Mom everything. The butterflies in her tummy were gone. "I was scared," Elani said. "But then it got really fun!" Mom hugged her tight. "I'm so proud of you." Elani couldn't wait for tomorrow.
