Sunbeams slant into the dusty attic where Maya kneels beside an old trunk, unrolling the yellowed map on the wooden floor. Her backpack, flashlight, and snacks lie open at her side, excitement glowing on her face.
Maya found an old map in her grandmother's attic. It showed a path through the Whispering Woods to a sparkling lake. "I'm going on an adventure!" she said excitedly. Maya packed her backpack with snacks, water, and a flashlight. She told her mom where she was going. "Be brave and be smart," her mom said with a smile. Maya waved goodbye and started walking toward the woods. The trees seemed to whisper secrets as she entered. She felt nervous but excited too.
On a moss-carpeted forest path, Maya looks up at Nutkin the red squirrel perched on an overhead branch, daylight flickering through Whispering Woods leaves. Nutkin gestures animatedly while warning her, and Maya grips her backpack straps, eyes wide.
Deep in the woods, Maya heard a voice. "Hello there!" said a red squirrel from a branch above. Maya couldn't believe her ears. "Did you just talk?" she asked. The squirrel nodded. "I'm Nutkin. These woods are magical! But watch out for the Grumpy Troll at the bridge." Maya gulped. "How do I get past him?" Nutkin scratched his head. "He loves riddles. Answer correctly and you may pass." Maya thanked Nutkin and continued carefully down the path. She thought of riddles she knew.
On a wooden bridge above a bubbling stream, Maya faces a small, grumpy troll with warty green skin and a patched brown vest; noon light dapples the scene. She taps her wristwatch, answering 'A clock!' as the troll's frown lifts.
Maya reached a wooden bridge over a bubbling stream. A small, grumpy troll blocked her way. "Answer my riddle or go back!" he growled. "What has hands but cannot clap?" Maya thought hard. She remembered her watch! "A clock!" she answered proudly. The troll's frown turned into a smile. "Correct! You are clever indeed." He stepped aside. Maya thanked him and crossed the bridge. The sparkling lake was just ahead. She had done it!
At the sparkling lakeshore at sunset, Maya sits on a smooth rock snapping a photo, Nutkin the red squirrel cheering beside her. Nearby, a small, grumpy troll with warty green skin and a patched brown vest waves from the bridge.
Maya reached the beautiful sparkling lake. The water shimmered like diamonds in the sunlight. She sat on a smooth rock and ate her snacks. "I was brave and I used my brain," she said happily. Nutkin appeared beside her. "You did wonderfully!" he cheered. Even the troll waved from his bridge. Maya took a photo to show her family. As the sun began to set, she headed home. She couldn't wait for her next incredible journey. Adventure was now her favorite thing!
