Old Adam spread his blanket out beside the river wide. The sun was high, the water clear, the perfect place to hide! He pulled his sandwich from his bag, with cheddar cheese and ham. "How wonderful!" said Adam, reaching for his strawberry jam. But WHOOSH! A shadow swooped right down, as black as shiny coal! A clever crow had snatched his lunch and left an empty bowl! "My sandwich!" Adam cried aloud, "Come back here, you thief!" The crow just cawed and flapped away beyond belief!

"Hey-ho! Follow that crow!" sang Adam with a shout. Along the river where the waters twist about! The crow had Adam's sandwich held so firmly in his beak. That cheeky little rogue was playing hide-and-seek! He'd fly a yard, then Adam ran, they danced along the track. The crow sang "Caw! Caw! Caw!" and Adam sang right back! They hopped and skipped beside the stream, beneath the cloudy sky. "Just wait until I catch you!" Adam gave a try!

The crow flew to a willow tree and perched upon a bough. He looked at Adam, tilted his head—he's surely laughing now! But Adam thought he'd eat it fast, but to his great surprise, The crow just tapped his foot and winked his shiny eyes! He let out a tremendous squawk, a beautiful refrain, Like a tin-whistle tune that's ringing in the rain! "You're quite the singer!" Adam said, and clapped his hands with glee. "Perhaps we both can share a song beneath this tree!"

So Adam sat beneath the tree and sang a merry song. That clever bird balanced the cheese and sang right along! They shared the crusts, they shared the tune, the river rolling by. The strangest pair of picnic friends beneath the sunny sky! "Next time I'm packing two sandwiches," said Adam with a grin, "And birdseed too, so you can join right in!" "Goodbye, dear Mister Crow!" he waved and packed his things away. The crow cawed back as if to say, "Let's meet another day!"
