Maya sits at the sunny kitchen table with a colorful cereal bowl, spoon frozen mid-air, while Mama and Papa stand beside her, beaming and clasping hands. The cozy indoor kitchen glows with morning light and cheerful yellow curtains.
Maya sat at the kitchen table eating cereal. Mama and Papa looked excited. "Maya, we have wonderful news," Mama said with a big smile. "You're going to be a big sister!" Maya's eyes grew wide. "A baby?" she asked. Papa nodded. "Yes! In a few months, you'll have a little brother or sister." Maya grinned. She had always wanted to be a big sister! "Can I help take care of the baby?" she asked hopefully. "Of course," Mama said, hugging her tight.
Maya kneels on a drop cloth in the nursery, rolling yellow paint onto the wall, while Papa steadies an open paint can and smiles proudly. Daylight streams through the window, lighting brushes and a starry baby blanket on a chair.
Maya helped Papa paint the nursery bright yellow. "The baby will love this color," she said proudly. Mama let Maya pick out soft blankets at the store. Maya chose one with little stars. At home, Maya practiced with her teddy bear. "Don't cry, baby," she whispered, rocking it gently. "I'll be the best big sister ever." Papa smiled watching her. "You're going to be wonderful, Maya." Maya beamed with pride. She couldn't wait to meet her new sibling!
In a softly lit hospital room, Mama reclines on the bed cradling newborn Diego wrapped in a pastel blanket. Maya stands beside them, gently touching his tiny hand, her face glowing with love amid nearby flowers and monitor screens.
The phone rang early one morning. Abuela arrived to stay with Maya. "Your baby brother is here!" she announced. At the hospital, Maya tiptoed into Mama's room. There in Mama's arms was the tiniest baby Maya had ever seen. "This is Diego," Mama said softly. Maya touched his little hand. Diego's fingers wrapped around hers. "Hi, Diego. I'm your big sister," Maya whispered. Her heart felt so full of love. Being a big sister was even better than she imagined!
Evening lamplight warms the living room where Maya leans over Diego’s crib, softly singing with a bright smile. Diego lies on a patterned blanket, looking up at her and grinning, while a plush teddy and lullaby book rest nearby.
At home, Maya wanted to help with everything. But sometimes Diego cried loudly. Sometimes Mama was too busy to play. Maya felt sad one afternoon. "I miss having Mama to myself," she told Papa. Papa hugged her. "Mama loves you so much, Maya. Being a big sister means sharing, but you're still very special." That evening, Maya sang to Diego. He stopped crying and smiled at her! Maya's heart melted. "I love you, little brother," she said. Sharing wasn't always easy, but Diego made it worthwhile.
