Lumi snuggled under her soft blanket, ready for bed. Her nightlight glowed on the table beside her. Then it flickered once, twice, and went dark. The room felt very quiet. Lumi sat up and looked around. Shadows danced on her walls. Outside her window, something sparkled. A bright star blinked at her. Once, twice, three times. It looked like the star was saying hello. Lumi smiled and waved back at the friendly star.

Lumi tiptoed to her window and peeked outside. Her backyard looked different at night. Little golden lights danced in the air like tiny fairies. Fireflies! They glowed and twirled between the flowers. The grass sparkled with dewdrops. Everything felt special and magical. Lumi put on her big boots and her warm coat. She grabbed her empty glass jar from her desk. Maybe the night had an adventure waiting just for her. She quietly opened the back door.

Lumi stepped into the cool grass. The fireflies danced around her head, tickling her nose. Suddenly, she heard a soft purr. A round, fluffy orange cat appeared from behind the rosebush. He had one bent ear and a crooked tail that wiggled like a question mark. The cat looked at Lumi with big green eyes. He meowed once, then walked toward the fence. He looked back as if asking, "Are you coming?" Lumi giggled and followed her new friend.

The orange cat squeezed through a gap in the wooden fence. Lumi bent down and followed him through. On the other side, she gasped. A stone path stretched before her, lined with glowing mushrooms! Some mushrooms glowed soft blue, others shimmered gold. They lit up the path like tiny lamps. The cat's crooked tail swished as he walked. His bent ear twitched at every sound. Lumi's boots clicked on the stones as she followed carefully behind him down the magical path.

At the end of the path stood an old oak tree. Its branches reached up toward the stars. Lumi heard a small, frightened sound. "Peep! Peep!" There on a low branch sat a tiny bird. Its silver feathers were all ruffled and messy. One small wing drooped at its side. The bird looked down at them with scared eyes. "I want to go home," it peeped softly. "But it's too dark. I'm too scared to fly." The bird's nest was high up in the tree.

"Don't worry, little bird. I'll help you!" Lumi said bravely. She reached for the lowest branch and started to climb. But her big boots were slippery. Her foot slid off the branch. Whoosh! Down she tumbled into a big pile of crunchy leaves. The orange cat rushed over and licked her cheek. Lumi wasn't hurt, just surprised. She sat up and saw the fireflies glowing nearby. Suddenly, she had a wonderful idea. She smiled and picked up her glass jar.

Lumi stood up and brushed off the leaves. She held up her jar and spoke sweetly to the fireflies. "Excuse me, little fireflies. Could you please help us? The bird is scared of the dark." The fireflies seemed to understand. One by one, they flew into her jar. Their golden light grew brighter and brighter. Soon the jar glowed like a tiny sun in Lumi's hands. The warm light made everything feel safe and cozy. Even the shadows didn't seem scary anymore.

Lumi lifted the glowing jar high. Golden light spread across the tree like sunshine. The little bird stopped shaking. Its eyes grew wide with wonder. "It's beautiful," the bird peeped softly. "I can see now!" The orange cat purred and rubbed against Lumi's leg. His bent ear perked up happily. Lumi smiled at her friends. "See? The dark isn't so scary when we help each other," she said. The fireflies danced inside the jar, making the light shimmer and sparkle all around them.

The orange cat meowed and gently nudged the little bird with his soft nose. "You can do it," Lumi whispered. The bird took a deep breath. With the jar's warm light showing the way, the bird hopped to the next branch. Then another. And another! The cat purred encouragement. Lumi held the jar steady, lighting each branch. "That's it! You're almost there!" she cheered. The bird's ruffled feathers looked braver now. Hop by hop, the little bird climbed higher toward its cozy nest.

Finally, the little bird reached its nest high in the tree. It snuggled down into the soft twigs and leaves. "Thank you, Lumi! Thank you, Cat!" it sang happily. The bird tucked its drooping wing close and closed its eyes. Lumi could see it was smiling. The orange cat purred a gentle goodnight song. Lumi carefully opened her jar. "Thank you, fireflies," she whispered. One by one, the fireflies floated out, blinking and dancing back into the magical night. Their job was done.

The orange cat walked Lumi back along the glowing mushroom path. The blue and gold lights seemed to twinkle farewell. At the gap in the fence, the cat rubbed against Lumi's leg one more time. His crooked tail curled into a happy shape. "Goodnight, friend," Lumi said, petting his bent ear gently. The cat purred and disappeared into the shadows. Lumi squeezed through the fence and walked across her dewy backyard. The night had been magical, but now she felt sleepy and warm.

Lumi climbed into her cozy bed and pulled up the blanket. Her nightlight was still dark, but she wasn't worried. She placed her glass jar on the nightstand. Even though the fireflies had left, the jar glowed with a soft, gentle light. It was just enough to make her room feel safe. Lumi looked out her window at the night sky. The friendly star blinked at her again. One, two, three times. Lumi smiled, closed her eyes, and drifted into sweet dreams full of stars.
