Emma loved watching airplanes soar across the sky. One sunny day, she pointed up and asked her teacher, Mr. Chen, "Why can't airplanes fly all the way to space?" Mr. Chen smiled. "That's a fantastic question! Let's find out together." He pulled out a model airplane and a picture of a rocket. "Airplanes and rockets both fly, but they work very differently," he explained. Mr. Chen held up a piece of paper. "Blow across the top," he told Emma. She blew, and the paper lifted! "Airplane wings work like this," Mr. Chen explained. "Moving air flows faster over the curved top of the wing. This creates lift that pushes the plane upward." Emma waved her hand like a wing. "But airplanes need air to fly," Mr. Chen continued. "The higher you go, the thinner the air becomes. Way up high, there's almost no air at all. Without air, airplane wings can't create lift."

How Airplanes Fly

"So how do rockets reach space?" Emma wondered. Mr. Chen inflated a balloon and let it go. It zipped across the room! "Rockets work like this balloon," he said. "They don't need air to push against. Instead, they use thrust—pushing hot gases downward makes the rocket shoot upward. This works even in space where there's no air!" Emma compared the model airplane and rocket. "Airplanes need air, but rockets don't," she said proudly. "Exactly right!" Mr. Chen cheered. Emma grinned, understanding the difference at last.

Rockets to the Rescue

"Now it's your turn to think like a scientist," Mr. Chen said. He gave Emma a challenge card. "If you were designing a vehicle to visit the moon, would you make it more like an airplane or a rocket? Why?" Emma thought carefully. "A rocket! Because there's no air on the moon for wings to use." Mr. Chen nodded approvingly. "You've learned so much today!" Emma looked up at the sky, imagining rockets zooming to space and airplanes flying through clouds, each doing what they do best.
