Joy blinked awake as her clock chimed loudly. "Ring! Ring!" She covered her ears, giggling. "How does that sound reach me all the way from my nightstand?" she wondered. She hopped out of bed, curious. At breakfast, she tapped her spoon on her bowl. "Clink!" She listened closely. "Sound is everywhere," she said. "But how does it travel to my ears?" Joy decided she would ask her teacher as soon as she got to school.

At school, Joy raised her hand. "Teacher, how do sounds travel to our ears?" The teacher smiled and clapped her hands. "Clap!" "That sound moved through the air to reach you," she said. The students giggled and clapped too. "Try whispering to your friend," the teacher said. One student whispered to another, who nodded, hearing every word. "Sound travels in waves, like ripples in water," the teacher explained, drawing wavy lines on the chalkboard for everyone.

"Let's feel sound!" the teacher said, pulling out a drum. She tapped it gently. "Boom!" Joy placed her hand on the drum's skin. "It's shaking!" she exclaimed. "That's a vibration," the teacher explained. "Vibrations push air, and that push travels to your ears." The students took turns feeling the drum vibrate. One student tapped harder, making a bigger thump. "The air carries the vibration like a wave," the teacher said, "until it reaches your eardrum inside your ear."

That night, Joy tapped her clock gently. "Tick, tock." She smiled, finally understanding. "Sound makes vibrations, they travel through air, and my ears catch them!" She tiptoed to her window and listened to crickets chirping outside. "Those vibrations traveled all the way to me," she whispered happily. Joy closed her eyes, thinking about waves of sound bouncing everywhere. Tomorrow, she would tell her teacher all about her discovery. Then she drifted off, dreaming of waves and whispers.
