Possum Poo the tri-colored cat stretches in a sun-warmed doorway at dawn, one paw reaching forward, a small school bag beside her. She yawns, eyes bright with purpose.
Possum Poo, the tabby cat, white and grey and black at that, wakes up early and stretches wide, ready for the morning stride. "Time for school!" she gives a mew, grabs her bag for the walking crew. Every day, rain or shine, she walks the children in a line. Her friends are waiting, big and small, Addie, Ava, Lucas, Ayla—she loves them all! Her job is special, her job is true, she keeps them safe the whole day through.
Addie, a 7-year-old girl with curly mellow blonde hair, pink glasses, and gold small hoop earrings, wearing a yellow t-shirt and blue jeans, opens her front door and laughs. Possum Poo, a white, grey, and black cat, sits on the doormat, looking up at her.
Addie opens up her door, blonde hair bouncing, ready for more. Possum Poo sits on the mat. "Let's go, Addie!" says the cat. Addie giggles, grabs her shoes, "I love our walking-to-school news!" Together down the path they go, past the tulips in a pretty row. "Where's Ava?" Addie asks with glee. "Next stop," purrs Poo, "just wait and see!" She wags her tail and leads the way, excited for this sunny day.
Ava, a 3-year-old girl with short mellow blonde ringlets, wearing a pink polka-dot dress and white sandals, holds Possum Poo's tail at the gate. Addie, in her yellow t-shirt and blue jeans, holds Ava's other hand as they cross the sandy path, Ava grinning proudly.
At the gate stands tiny Ava, three years old with a happy grin. Short blonde hair bounces as she waves, "Can Possum Poo help me begin?" "Hold my tail," the cat replies, "I'll help you cross with careful eyes." Addie takes her sister's hand, walking slow across the sandy land. Ava skips with joyful hops, past the bakery and the little shops. "I did it!" Ava cheers with pride, Possum Poo walks right by her side.
Lucas, a 5-year-old boy with a brown mohawk and cheeky dimpled smile, wearing a green striped shirt and navy shorts, runs down the street, brown hair flying. Possum Poo turns with gentle eyes, waiting on the path.
Down the street comes Lucas running, brown hair flying in the morning sun. "Wait for me!" the five-year-old cries, Possum Poo turns with gentle eyes. "No worries, Lucas, take your time, we'll walk together, step in rhyme." Lucas joins the little crew, laughing loud, "I made it, phew!" Four friends now, and one wise cat, marching onward, just like that.
Ayla, a 9-year-old girl with medium mellow blonde hair and a fringe, gold small hoop earrings, wearing a light blue button-up shirt and khaki skirt, stands at the crosswalk checking left and right. She holds Lucas's hand and Ava's hand, with Possum Poo beside them, all in a careful line.
Oldest Ayla, nine years old, blonde hair neat, so brave and bold. "I'll watch the street," she says with care, "Possum Poo, I'll help you there." Together they check left and right, holding little hands so tight. Across the crosswalk, safe and slow, five friends walking, row by row. Possum Poo gives Ayla a nod, proud of how she helps the squad.
Lucas, in his green striped shirt and navy shorts, leaps over a big puddle, water splashing high. Possum Poo stands on the dry edge, watching, while Ava in her pink polka-dot dress and white sandals and Addie in her yellow t-shirt and blue jeans laugh nearby.
A puddle waits along the way, big and splashy on this day. Ava stops, "I'm scared to jump!" Possum Poo gives a gentle nudge. "Walk around," the cat suggests, "or hop across, whichever's best." Lucas jumps with a mighty leap, splashing high in the puddle deep. Everyone laughs, their shoes a bit wet, the best adventure they've had yet.
Possum Poo sniffs behind a tree and discovers Addie's missing shoe. Addie, in her yellow t-shirt and blue jeans, claps and reaches for it, relieved and smiling.
Addie stops, "Oh no, my shoe!" Fallen off—what will she do? Possum Poo sniffs all around, and soon the missing shoe is found! "Here it is, behind that tree," purrs the cat so happily. Addie claps and puts it on, "Thank you, Poo! Now let's move on!" The friends all cheer for Possum Poo, their clever cat who saw them through.
Ayla, in her light blue button-up shirt and khaki skirt, points at bright red and yellow flowers along the fence, counting with a bright expression. Possum Poo sits beside her, purring, while Lucas in his green striped shirt and navy shorts points at a flower too.
Along the fence, bright flowers grow, red and yellow in a pretty row. "Let's count them all!" says Ayla bright, "One, two, three," in morning light. Ava counts with chubby hands, Lucas points to where one stands. Possum Poo just purrs along, humming a soft and happy song. Ten flowers counted, big and small, the happiest walk of them all.
A big dog barks from behind a fence; Ava, in her pink polka-dot dress and white sandals, steps closer to Possum Poo, eyes wide. The cat stands between Ava and the fence, tail raised, calm and protective.
A big dog barks from by the gate, Ava jumps, her eyes go wide. Possum Poo steps up so great, "It's okay, stay by my side." The dog just wags and wants to play, safe behind the fence that way. Lucas waves, "Hello there, pup!" Everyone's fear is soon filled up with giggles bright and friendly cheer, the walk continues, school is near.
Addie points at the tall school building, beaming, in her yellow t-shirt and blue jeans. Possum Poo sits on the sidewalk beside the four children, tail curled neatly, watching the school.
"Look! I see it!" Addie shouts, the school stands tall, no room for doubts. Ayla smiles, "We made it through, thanks to clever Possum Poo." Lucas skips, Ava claps her hands, following their cat's careful plans. The bell rings out a welcome sound, children gather all around. Possum Poo sits proud and neat, watching from the sidewalk street.
At the school door, a teacher waves, and Addie, in her yellow t-shirt and blue jeans, waves back. Possum Poo gives one last mew, sitting at the sidewalk's edge, looking up at the children.
At the door, the teacher waves, "Good morning, friends, you all behaved!" Possum Poo gives one last mew, "Have a good day, I'll come for you!" Addie waves, "Bye, Poo, see you soon!" Ava blows a kiss, so high and so sweet. Lucas grins and Ayla too, "Thank you for walking us, Possum Poo!" The cat turns home with a happy heart, knowing she played her special part.
Possum Poo waits near the school gate as the bell rings. Addie, Ava in her pink polka-dot dress and white sandals, Lucas in his green striped shirt and navy shorts, and Ayla in her light blue button-up shirt and khaki skirt skip down the path behind the cat, smiling.
When school is done, the bell rings clear, Possum Poo is waiting near. "Let's go home!" she calls with cheer, four happy friends, no need to fear. Addie, Ava, Lucas too, and Ayla follow Possum Poo. Down the path they skip and sing, talking about their school day thing. Every morning, every day, Possum Poo will lead the way.
