Tank the snapping turtle woke to sunshine spilling over the pond. Today was special—his first wooden lacrosse stick, carved by his grandfather, rested in his claws. He admired the leather pockets, stretched tight and strong. "I'm ready," Tank whispered, watching lily pads ripple in the breeze. Cattails swayed, and pine trees hummed softly in the wind. Across the meadow, laughter echoed as young animal friends tossed a ball back and forth. Tank's heart thumped with excitement. He took a deep breath and waddled toward the grassy field, ready to learn.

At the meadow, Tank watched Bear Cub scoop up the ball smoothly. Fox flicked her stick, sending it sailing to Raccoon. Tank tried to copy them, but his throw landed with a thud in the grass. "Oops!" he laughed, shell wobbling as he scrambled after it. Raccoon waved him over kindly. "Keep your knees bent, Tank!" she called. Tank tried again, bending low like a turtle hiding in its shell. This time, the ball zipped through the air, straight into Bear Cub's waiting pocket. Tank cheered, feeling proud of his small success.

Fox passed Tank the ball once more. He cradled it carefully in his stick's pocket, remembering to stay low and steady. Step by step, Tank ran across the meadow, dodging Raccoon's gentle reach. "Go, Tank, go!" Bear Cub shouted, pointing toward a goal of stacked stones. Tank's heart raced as he swung his stick forward. The ball soared through sunlit air, arching high above the cattails, and landed right between the stones. His friends gasped, then burst into cheers. Tank's first goal sparkled like morning dew.

Tank held his stick high, grinning from ear to ear. Fox, Bear Cub, and Raccoon gathered around, patting his shell proudly. "You did it, Tank!" Raccoon cheered. The pond glittered under the golden sun as birds sang overhead. Tank looked at his grandfather's carved stick, grateful for the gift and the lesson it taught. "I can't wait to play again tomorrow," Tank said happily. Together, the four friends raced back toward the pond, laughter echoing across Turtle Island as the sun rose higher over the peaceful water.
